Read the question with the answer
A cashier asks “봉투 드릴까요?” (Would you like a bag?). “괜찮아요” can politely decline. After “여기 앉아도 돼요?” (May I sit here?), the same expression may give permission. Tone, gestures and the next sentence also matter.
| Situation | Possible intention | Clearer Korean | English explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 봉투 드릴까요? | Declining | 아니요, 봉투는 필요 없어요. | No bag, thank you. |
| 여기 앉아도 돼요? | Permission | 네, 앉으셔도 돼요. | Yes, you can sit here. |
| 많이 놀랐어요? | Reassurance | 네, 지금은 괜찮아요. | I'm okay now. |
| 늦어서 미안해요. | Accepting an apology | 괜찮아요. 많이 기다리지 않았어요. | That's okay. I haven't waited long. |
What changed in translation tools
Google announced alternative translations and contextual explanations on February 26, 2026. That announcement described mobile availability in the US and India, with the web to follow. It does not establish current availability for every Korean account. This is product documentation, not an independent accuracy comparison.
Give a conversational AI the setting
Specify the place, listener and purpose. Try: “A customer in a Korean convenience store wants to politely decline a shopping bag. Give two short Korean replies, their English meanings and the difference.” In a conventional translation box, that instruction may itself be translated. Enter the actual message instead: “아니요, 봉투는 필요 없어요. 감사합니다.”
Check meaning separately from politeness
“수건 두 장 더 주세요” asks for two additional towels. “수건 두 장 더 주실 수 있을까요?” makes the request more indirect. Check the quantity and whether you want additional towels or replacements. A polite sentence can still convey the wrong action.
Use dictionaries alongside translation
The National Institute of Korean Language provides a learner dictionary and translations of its headwords and definitions in 11 languages. Papago's help documents listening and saving translations to Favorites. Save the situation alongside the sentence: “declining a bag at a convenience store.” These are suggested study practices, not experimentally proven learning outcomes.
Build a reusable phrase collection
Keep the original question, reply, intention and an explicit alternative together. Add new situations when you encounter them. Sources checked October 8, 2026; no app ranking or device-level feature test was conducted.
